Locations

What is Location in a warehouse?

A location, in Omniful, refers to a designated storage space within a hub where SKUs (Stock Keeping Units) are stored or a location where picked items are consolidated. It serves as a pivotal point for inventory management, facilitating the tracking and retrieval of items. Locations can be customized based on your business needs, providing flexibility in terms of structure and categorization.

Why are locations needed?

The importance of locations lies in their ability to:

  • Organizing Inventory: Locations provide a systematic way to organize and categorize inventory, making it easier to locate specific items.
  • Optimizing Picking: The type and priority of a location influence the order in which items are picked. This optimization enhances the efficiency of order fulfillment.
  • Reducing Errors: Clear organization and identification of locations contribute to minimizing errors in picking and restocking.
  • Enabling Scalability: As your business grows, having a structured location system allows for seamless scalability in managing increasing inventory.
  • Flexibility: Choose between custom and standard setups, adapting the location system to suit your unique business requirements.

Location Configurations

One can configure location creation in two ways:

  1. Custom Location: Create custom locations without predefined entities. These locations allow users the freedom to define barcodes as they see fit.
  2. Standard Locations: Opt for a structured approach by selecting enabled entities (floor, aisle, shelf, rack, location, bin) within the hub. The standard location is then represented by a barcode with hyphenated entities.

Location Attributes

After creating a location, users can further define its attributes:

  1. Location Type Specify the purpose of the location with one of the following types:
    • Picking: Designed for the picking process.
    • Backstorage: Intended for storing additional inventory.
    • Consolidation: Used for consolidating items.
  2. Picking Priority: Assign a picking priority to influence the order in which locations are picked. If the priority is greater than zero, it impacts the picking sequence.
  3. Zone ID (Optional): Optionally, assign a zone ID to indicate the specific zone to which the location belongs.
